Scrap Quilts
6 hour classes

Woven Star -  (6 hours) I love stars of all kinds, and this new one, from Scrap Frenzy, is so simple to make you won't believe your eyes. Start with strips, add a simple construction trick, and stars appear before your eyes. Top it off with a "Sensational Setting" and you'll have a spectacular quilt. Sewing machine required.

Skyrockets - (6 hours) Based on the Skyrocket quilt in Savvy Sets for Scrappy Blocks (page 35), in this class, we explore what can happen if you take a traditional block and turn it on point, then add triangles to each side to square it up again. By piecing those triangles, you can get some amazing effects. We'll do freezer paper foundation piecing for the triangles -- not your traditional freezer paper piecing. With this method, you peel the foundation away and use it again, and you never have to sew on paper. The class sample is 3 blocks for a great table runner or wall quilt. Sewing machine required.

Pinwheel Stars -- (6 hours) This is a fun quilt to make with your stash of 2 1/2" strips. You'll learn to make half-square triangles from strips, two ways to do Mary's Triangles, folded corners, and we'll talk about several ways to make pieced sashing that adds complexity to your design without adding difficult stitching. You'll be amazed at how simple it is!  We'll work on a 2-block version in class that you can use for a table runner or wall hanging. If you want to make your quilt larger, you'll only need to purchase more background -- you can get the rest from your stash.

Dylan's Stars - (6 hours) This is an original star design, named for my grandson Dylan. We'll do half-square triangles from strips, folded corners, a little bit of freezer paper foundation piecing, and two kinds of pieced sashing. You'll see how simple this complex-looking conglomeration of stars is to construct. The class project is the table runner/wall hanging, but you can make it bigger if you choose. Sewing machine required.

Stamp Basket in a Garden Maze - (6 hours) This block was featured on a postage stamp (a 13 cent one, so you know how long ago that was!) and has been a favorite block almost forever. I've changed the piecing methods to really simplify it, and added a Garden Maze border that's so easy to construct that you'll love doing it again and again. We'll learn how to adapt the Garden Maze to different sized blocks.

Christmas Eve Quilt - (6 hours) It's a stunning block with lots of little pieces that look really difficult to construct, but you'll be amazed at how easy it really is, once you break it down into it's individual parts. I'll show you how to do that, and I'll also show you several different ways that you can put it together. We'll work on the table runner size in class, but you can make it larger if you like. Sewing machine required

3 hour classes

Mary's Triangles -  (3 hours) Here's a quick and easy technique for making Shaded Four-Patch blocks by the dozens. When you are done, there are hundreds of ways to put them together. Explore some of these ways, and receive ideas for even more arrangements. Class includes a fabric swap. Sewing machine required.

Stars for Owen - (3 hours) A simple but effective original star design named for my grandson Owen, you'll learn 2-for-1 piecing and a great way to use those 2 1/2" strips you have been collecting. We'll also do a really simple pieced sashing that makes the quilt look even more complicated.  I'll show you several other designs you can make with the units we'll construct. Class project is a 3-block table runner, but you can easily make it larger. Just purchase more background fabric and select strips for the stars from your stash when you get home. This is a great way to use up those left-over strips. Sewing machine required.

   Built-In Borders

Designing with Built-In Borders -  (6 hours) Wouldn't you love to make complex pieced borders that are simple, and that always fit? I've re-designed 10 traditional borders so that they can be made as blocks rather than long strips. They are easy to piece, and fun to use in your quilt. This class will show you how to adapt traditional pieced borders so that they are made as blocks, then put this new knowledge to work in a wall quilt with a built-in border. Sewing machine required.

Laurel Wreath with Christmas Crackers Border -  (6 hours) Use your luscious floral fabrics for the Laurel Wreath blocks in the center of this quilt, then add the oh-so-simple Christmas Crackers border for a fabulous finish. You'll love the simple-to-construct, never-fails-to-fit, Built-In Border methods that Sally will show you. Sewing machine required.

Superbowl Star with Sawtooth Border -  (6 hours) Do you love pieced borders, but have a hard time making them fit your quilt. Make it easy on yourself with Sally's simple-to-construct, never-fails-to-fit, Built-In Border methods. We'll do the sawtooth border in this class, and I'll show you how you can adapt it to many quilt designs. We'll work on the  Superbowl Star for the center of the quilt, then make the sawtooth border to go around it. You can choose to make the Sawtooth Innie or the Sawtooth Outie border. Sewing machine required.

Sensational Sets

Exploring Settings - (3 hours) Bring a stash of blocks that you want to set into a quilt and we'll explore ways to put them together. I'll show you a dozen or more settings, and explain how to construct the quilts in any of the settings. Although we won't be sewing in this class, you'll be able to start as soon as you get home. No sewing machines required.
